More than 152,000 city students may soon be without a ride to class as the school bus drivers union warned of an imminent strike.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181, which represents about 75 % of the city's school bus drivers, is threatening to walk off the job immediately if the city does not agree to its terms for a new contract.
Union president Michael Cordiello said that the strike could happen any time.
"In a time when the economy is failing and people need to be in work, this is all about protecting jobs," said Cordiello, who added that there has not been a system-wide bus strike in the city since 1979.
